The United States Peace Corps was founded in 1961, as part of
then-president John Kennedy’s call that Americans ask what they can do for
their country. Its mission has remained, for over 50 years,
what it was then: to promote world peace and
friendship. Its goals, designed to
accomplish that mission, are to help people in interested countries meet their
needs for trained manpower, to promote a better understanding of America and
Americans in those countries, and to promote a better understanding of other
countries and people in America. I love
the idea that mutual understanding will promote world peace. I think it’s probably true.
The Corps has over 7,000 volunteers in over 60 countries today. In its 50-plus-year history, it has sent over 210,000 volunteers to 140 countries, some of which have developed to the point that they no longer suffer a need for ‘trained manpower’ from abroad. So that’s nice, nie?
